FAQS

Why are you letting people decide what to pay you? Are you insane?

Well, yes, many of my friends tell me that I’m insane. Am I insane for allowing people to pay me what they believe my work is worth? I don’t think so. I believe that in the long run, I will make more money with this pricing system, and I am not the first “crazy person” to believe this.  If you are interested in learning more about value based pricing, please check out these links:

I’m about to contact you — How long will it take you to respond to me?

Normally, I respond within 24 hours. (I do my best to get away from my business on Saturday and Sunday). If my response time will be longer than 24 hours, I will have an auto-responder set up to let you know that. FYI — I am on Central Standard Time in the U.S.A.

Why are you ROCK_READ__ROAM on Twitter?

I started a business called Rock, Read, And Roam! a few years ago. I really didn’t want to start over with zero followers on Twitter and I didn’t want to confuse my current Twitter followers by changing my handle.

Are you using the principles of Social Business Enterprise and Sustainable Business in your business?

Here’s the Cliff notes on that — My business is a member of 1% For The Planet. That means I will contribute a minimum of 1% of my net sales to conservation organizations. I also will donate three percent of what you pay me to a nonprofit organization. It is my hope, that the main way that I will contribute to both business sustainability and to social business enterprise is by helping people who are interested in using business, government, or education as means for positive social change become awesome speakers! My contributions to sustainable business and social business enterprise will be a work in progress, so please check back about that.

I think that TOMS Shoes is a great model for Social Entrepreneurs and I use this information from their website for inspiration:

“TOMS Shoes is a for-profit company with giving at its core. With our One for One mission, TOMS Shoes transforms our customers into benefactors which allows us to grow a truly sustainable business rather than depending on fundraising for support. This model has enabled us to give more shoes at a rapid rate and created thousands of customer-philanthropists along the way.”

This doesn’t look like a “serious business” website. What’s up with that?

I agree! For many people, public speaking is so serious that they fear doing it. My goal is to help people have fun with speaking, and I want my website to reflect that goal.

What do Siberian Huskies have to do with speaking?

Are you kidding? Have you seen these videos of Mishka on YouTube? (Mishka the talking Husky has nothing to do with and has not endorsed The Speaking Husky.) On a more “serious note,” according to the American Kennel Club, Huskies are intelligent, friendly, alert, and outgoing, qualities that I believe all speakers can achieve during a presentation. Also, my Siberian Husky, Cody, is my best buddy.

Can you work with me to help me become a better writer?

I’m not currently doing that, but I will be glad to speak with you about writing a speech, paper, etc. for you.

How long do you plan to spend on your DIY Postgraduate Degree in Communication?

My whole life! Once I read all of the books on my first speaking and writing book lists I may graduate to a Personal PHD in Communication though.

Huh? I thought a Postgraduate Degree was a PHD.

At one time, I thought that too. Any education beyond four years of college is considered postgraduate though. For just about every definition in the world for postgraduate, just click here.
